Today was a good day because I was very ready to go home. The group all met up for breakfast around 7:30am and met down in the lobby where it seemed like from the looks on all my fellow classmates faces that they too were ready to go home. The charter came and took us to the airport where we all got our luggage checked and ready for the flight. I didn’t realize until Dr. Stewart told me that I needed to make sure that the ticket woman knew my bags were going to SFO from O’Hare instead of Nashville like the rest of the group was. I got that straightened out and went to meet the group at at restaurant right next to our gate for departure. I got my last little taste of real food which for the millionth time seemed like great Italian food and I had no shame about it.
The first flight was not bad at all -at least for me- because I sat next to Dr. Hawley and we talked about the trip and how much we enjoyed different aspects of places like Fraunhofer, TU Berlin, AKG and Neumann’s Headquarters. I told Dr. Hawley my favorite part of the trip had to be Fraunhofer and he too agreed with me. After the flight from Vienna we landed in London and we had to take what seemed like 4 different transits and eight different walkways just to make it to gate C-66 where we were waiting to board. There was an hour or two of a lay over and everyone decided to get some final food in before the long haul but I realized that I didn't want to eat at the time. I decided to just eat on the plane and get to my gate as fast as possible so I wouldn't miss it. When I got there I saw Allison and Ali hanging out so I sat next to them for a long time and shared our thoughts on the the entire trip with each other. I could tell that the fact that we were going home was exciting for everyone, but also deflating and really nostalgic because of how much fun we all had together. As everyone got to the gate we all boarded and got on the plane in time for boarding although, some of the other students almost missed our flight because they were a tiny bit late for our boarding time.
The plane ride wasn’t so bad because I got to sit next to two good friends of mine Mollie and Emma, reminiscing on the entire trip with them. When we landed in Chicago we all had to go through customs and figure out how to get to our separate terminals for our flights to Nashville and my flight to SFO. I got my bag fairly quicker than I did the past 3 times I’ve checked my bag internationally so I was able to be ready waiting by the transit within good time of everyone else. Some people had different flights and such and I ended up having to get off the transit at a different time than everyone else. So when everyone else had to get off it was one of the quickest goodbyes I’ve ever accomplished as everyone was there and then gone in one moment. I couldn’t believe how fast everything was over. My dad was waiting for me in the terminal in SFO since 2:30am and I got in around 4am and I couldn’t have been more grateful he was there. I slept the entire next day until 11pm when I ate some food at home and then continued sleeping until the next morning. Jetlag had defeated me but overall I definitely had the best trip of my life! I later realized that the rest of the group had their own troubles with O'Hare leaving their bags in Chicago instead of sending them to Nashville. This must have been a rough way to end the trip for them although I don't think it negatively affected the memories that everyone took away from this trip. We can always look back on this time and say we did it, and it was special.
