Today started out great being one of the warmer days of the trip so far. We went to the Neumann headquarters and got a tour of the building and what their products are like. Neumann is a very popular microphone company that many artists around the world use. They were founded in 1928 by Georg Neumann and almost all studios in the world have at least one Neumann microphone. The president explained that they are all about putting the best equipment out on the market. But they also make cheaper microphones so that lower income consumers can get them. They keep up with the new ideas in the market and they find out what their common customer wants. We then went to their small anechoic chamber that they use to test the frequency response of microphones. Herr Wolfgang Fraissinet, who is President Georg Neumann GmbH and Director of Audio Recording, was a wonderful host to our group. We thank him for his kind hospitality.
We then split up and half of us stayed in the area of the city and the other half went back to the hotel. I stayed in the area and got a classic currywurst which is very popular in Berlin. It was delightful.
Later, we went to Technical University of Berlin and listened to Diemo Schwarz is part of of the the Sound, Movement and Interaction team at IRCAM talk about corpus based concatenation sound texture synthesis. The basic idea of it is creating sounds that are found in nature with sounds created by computer code.
We then had downtime and a few of us went to a great restaurant called The Bird and then walked around the area, Hackesher Market. We then went to the Berlin Wall one last time and saw the murals of artists that were asked to paint on it. Seeing it at night gave us a different perspective.
